House of Blues - Jam Night

DEBI CANDLISH (QLD) Plus MATT FREDERICK BOOK LAUNCHTuesday 29th March 2022

Feature act: DEBI CANDLISH (QLD)
Plus MATT FREDERICK BOOK LAUNCH: "A Meeting at the Crossroads – Robert Johnson and The Devil"

DEBI CANDLISH was raised in the foothills of North Carolina, and brought up in the musical world of blues, old time country, and traditional gospel music. Fortunate to experience hearing both Delta and Piedmont blues live as a teenager, that music has been entrenched in her being ever since. Moving to Australia in the late 80’s, Debi was amazed to find an incredible array of blues artists in Melbourne who were keeping the genre alive. After running the popular blues venue 'Muddy Waters' for several years, a passion for playing slide guitar with mentors the likes of James Bridges from Collard Greens and Gravy, Skip Sail, Steve Plater, Alex Burns and CW Stoneking, began her musical performance journey. Her debut album ”Ain’t Got the Blues” set her confidently on course as an artist in her own right, especially after winning Best Debut Album at the MBAS Blues Music awards. Debi eventually moved to North Queensland and developed her performance as a soloist and duo act, with a repertoire featuring many traditional female blues artists and songs. With a wide spread of appearances at countless venues and festivals over 20 years, Debi is proud to have earned the title Queen of the Blues in Far North Queensland.

MATT FREDERICK launches his book “A Meeting at the Crossroads – Robert Johnson and the Devil” at MBAS! Books available to purchase on the night, so be the first to score your signed copy. Did Robert Johnson sell his soul to the Devil? What happened at The Crossroads at midnight? The story of bluesman Robert Johnson and his deal with the Devil at The Crossroads is one of the core myths at the heart of Blues and Rock ‘N’ Roll. In “A Meeting at the Crossroads – Robert Johnson and the Devil”, Matt Frederick explores the history and meaning of the myth, from the Mississippi Delta to The Crossroads of ancient times.

Matt Frederick is a writer, broadcaster and DJ based in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated with Honours from La Trobe University with a BA majoring in Philosophy and Studies in Western Traditions. A life-long lover of the blues, he hosts the weekly program The Juke Joint on PBS 106.7fm.
